Live interview assistance: how it works and what to check

What is live interview assistance?

Live interview assistance is software that supports you during an interview, usually by turning supported audio into a transcript and offering AI answer suggestions. It differs from a mock interview: the support happens during the actual conversation. Use it only when the interview rules permit it, and keep your answers accurate to your own experience.

How does a live interview assistant work?

The details vary by product. In InterviewRep, you provide resume and optional job-description context, start supported audio capture, and request AI answer suggestions with Space or Generate Answer. Suggestions are on demand; they are not automatically generated for every question.

  1. Before the conversation: check whether assistance and transcription are allowed. Prepare the context you want the tool to use and test the exact audio setup.
  2. During the conversation: follow the transcript, request a suggestion when appropriate, and decide what fits. Pause capture when you do not need it.
  3. After the conversation: review saved transcript messages if you chose to save a session. Check the product’s deletion and retention information before keeping sensitive material.

Our release checks verified a microphone transcript, requested AI suggestions and a saved conversation archive. Those checks do not establish that every meeting platform, operating system or shared-audio combination works.

Will it hear the interviewer, or only my microphone?

A microphone permission normally grants access to a microphone input. It does not establish access to a remote participant’s audio. Hearing a remote interviewer may require a supported browser-tab or system-audio share, depending on your browser, device and meeting setup.

A screen-sharing chooser can return video without an audio track. Seeing a shared screen is therefore not proof that remote speech will be transcribed. Our shared-audio test did not certify system-audio support. Test with a consenting person before relying on it in an interview.

For browser-specific details, see Chrome’s microphone-permission instructions and Chrome’s screen-sharing controls documentation. These explain browser controls, not a guarantee of InterviewRep compatibility with every setup.

How should I use an AI answer suggestion?

Treat the suggestion as a draft to evaluate. An AI system can misunderstand the question, use an unsuitable example, or invent details. Resume context can improve relevance without making the answer automatically correct.

Before using a suggestion, ask: Did I actually do this? Is the result accurate? Can I explain the details and answer a follow-up? If any answer is no, change or discard the suggestion. Do not claim projects, skills or results that are not yours.

For a behavioral question, a useful outline is the situation, your responsibility, the action you personally took and the real outcome. For a technical question, check assumptions and edge cases rather than repeating a fluent answer uncritically.

What should I check about privacy and consent?

Review the interviewer’s stated rules and obtain any required permission for assistance or audio capture. Rules and obligations depend on the situation; a product cannot grant permission on the interviewer’s behalf.

Before providing a resume or recording a conversation, ask the provider:

InterviewRep processes live audio for transcription and uses interview text plus supplied context for suggestions. Saved sessions retain transcript and answer messages. This guide does not certify provider retention periods, training practices, deletion coverage or compliance. Avoid submitting confidential employer or client material until you understand and accept the applicable handling.

Is live help the same as interview practice?

No. Practice simulates questions before an interview. Live help supports an ongoing conversation. InterviewRep’s primary purpose is live interview assistance; any practice features are a separate use case.
